Text Box: WOODBURN LUTHERAN SCHOOL PAW PRINTS
  WEEKLY NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 26, 2007

Lord Take My Hand

and Lead Me

Prayer Cards – Each morning our teachers meet for devotions as we prepare for our day. We also regularly pray for our students and each school family. The four students we prayed for this week included: Blake Fuller (K), Kirk Nahrwold (K), Malia Wittwer (Pre-K), and Jack Warnock (Pre-K). The school families who we lifted up in prayer included: the Kevin and Jennifer Wells family, the Peggy Grubb, Andrew Miller family, the Joshua and Mattithyahu Keller family, and the Mark and Linda Rekeweg family.

Fire Loss – One of the families in town lost their home and all of their belongings this past week in a fire. Two of the children are attending Woodburn Elementary next door to WLS. The Woodburn Elementary PLT is collecting items and monetary donations to help this family out. We would like to take one of our chapel offering to help as well. Next week’s chapel offering (October 31st) will be donated to this family. I think for us this is something that neighboring Christians should be doing when a need like this arises.

Kleinhenn Sale Results – Thanks to everyone who helped in our recent Kleinhenn sale. Total sales were over $8,000 which will result in a profit of over $3,700 for WLS. This profit goes back into the classrooms to help the teachers provide for special teaching supplies that would have to come out of the school budget otherwise.

The top five family sellers will go out for pizza with Mr. Hoyer. Those top sellers include: Jon, Jason, and Michael Lindberg, Kyle and Kirk Nahrwold, Logan Buuck, Joshua and Morgan Gerig, and Brice and Emma Rekeweg. Rounding out the top ten families are: Jordan Wells, Tara Gerig, Buddy Douglas, Spencer and Nicole Osborn, and Meredith and Tori Mathews. (The top ten families will also receive monetary prizes). Congratulations and thanks again for all of your hard work.

Please note: All Kleinhenn sales monies are to be in the school office by Monday, October 29.

Basketball Kick-Off Saturday – On Saturday, November 3rd we will kick off the boys basketball season. Our varsity boys will play a game at 9:00 am and then another game at 1:00 pm. I am still looking for a few volunteers to help during the three games that will be played that day. If you can help with running the clock or scorekeeping please let me know. Also needed are three sets of Concession Workers. Call the office if you can help in some way. Everyone is invited to come and watch these games and cheer our boys on. There will be an admission charge for this tournament: $2/adult and $1/student for the whole day.

Oh, Give Thanks – Thanksgiving is less than a month away now. I am looking for some Thanksgiving stories from the students that I can print in future Paw Prints. If any student would like to write a story about thanksgiving traditions or other Thanksgiving related stories, give them to your teacher and we will see if we can print some of them.

Woodburn Lutheran Christmas Program – Mark your calendars and invite the relatives – our WLS Christmas Program, “Joy to the World!” is scheduled for Thursday, December 20. Two performances, at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. will be held in the school gym. The teachers are working on all the details and will begin practicing with the students sometime in November.

SCRIP NEWS!  The SCRIP ladies are now selling On-Hand SCRIPS each school day morning from the kitchen. They will be available  Monday through Friday at the Kitchen Window from 7:30-9:30 a.m. (If you see the kitchen window open after lunch hours, you may also come at that time – approximately 1:00 p.m. until they close up for the day). Please note: SCRIP Sales will continue at Christ and Zion Churches on Sundays as usual. “Ordered” SCRIPS will still work the same as usual. If you place an order by Wednesday before 2:00 p.m., you will get your SCRIPS the following week on Thursday.

More SCRIP Info: Halloween is fast approaching. Don’t forget to get your Woodburn Fresh Foods SCRIP to buy all of that candy for the trick or treaters. Did you hear that the WFF store could close its doors soon if business doesn’t pick up? Please help WFF by giving them your business! And help out WLS at the same time by buying SCRIP.

Do you know someone with a birthday coming up? SCRIP is the perfect gift for all ages. Young children would love a Toys R Us SCRIP, or how about a Build A Bear SCRIP? Older children love to shop – how about a Limited or Old Navy SCRIP? Teens with a car would love to have a Marathon (on-hand) SCRIP – or how about a fast food SCRIP for them, like Burger King. For adult family members, you can’t go wrong with Cracker Barrel or Hall’s SCRIP. Stop by and get your SCRIP today!

Chapel News Next Wednesday’s Chapel Service (October 31 – Reformation Day) will be held at

WLS, 8:10 a.m., with Mr. Staub leading. For October and November, we will be collecting chapel offerings and Christmas gift items for two families through the Christmas Bureau. (See the note below about this mission project.) As of October 17, $232.55 was donated for this mission. Reminder: Next week’s Chapel offerings will go to the Woodburn family whose house burned. Chapel envelopes will be given to K-8 students next Tuesday. Parents, Grandparents, Friends of WLS students – you are all welcome to join us for any or all of our Chapel services. Just read the WLS weekly newsletter and monthly calendars for chapel locations and times.

Dear Parents,  Christmas in October – can you see the snow falling? This year, for our October and November chapel offerings we are adopting two families from the Allen County Christmas Bureau. We will be working on this project during the next two months to give each family a nice Christmas. There is so much to do to put together a Christmas for each family to remember. Please help us make this project successful.

For each family, we are asked to to provide a complete Christmas Day meal, staple items for the family’s pantry, one new outfit of clothing for each family member, and one new toy/gift for each infant, child, and teenager. We will be sending home information about each family later in the month regarding sizes and ages, along with specific items they are requesting for their family.

Please bring in the pantry items first. We will have boxes out in the hallways for you to drop off items. Watch for info about various classroom fund-raising projects for these families.

Prayer Corner

Pray for the family of Harry Meyer, great-uncle to Andy Meyer, who died this week.

Pray also for Andy’s mom, Karen Meyer, who had surgery this week

Pray for those in southern California who have been evacuated or lost their homes to the raging fires. Perhaps you have family or friends in that area. Two that we know of: Don and Wilma Voelker’s daughter is within a few miles of the fires and Mrs. Woebbeking’s niece, who lives in San Diego, is 20 minutes from the flames and she also works at the San Diego Zoo, where part of the extensive wildlife sanctuary acreage has burned.

PLEASE READ THE WLS MEMORIAL AND GIFT IDEA LIST THAT IS PRINTED ON THE LAST PAGE OF THIS NEWSLETTER.

WLS Memorial and Gift Idea List

The following is a list of  WLS needs that could be donated towards with memorial donations or Thrivent matching funds if the donations are earmarked for certain items on this list.

  1. Classroom Maps – Wall Maps or Overhead Maps – Most of our old classroom maps are in need of replacement.
  2. Additional Room Wiring – Our rooms in the older section of our building which was built in 1963 never had enough electrical outlets. Now with more and more electrical needs in today’s classrooms we would like to update the number of outlets/room. The cost/room is approximately $575. This is also a safety issue and concern at this time.
  3. Additional Water Fountains – Some of the water fountains in the old side of our building need to be replaced with modern cooling fountains. Replacement fountains are approximately $500/fountain.
  4. Air Conditioning – Along with cooler water, we would benefit from air conditioning in the older rooms. There are many weeks in the fall and the late spring where the heat in these rooms makes it difficult to teach or to learn.
  5. Technology Needs – We have been very fortunate with technology grants from the Lutheran foundation. There are additional projector needs in the individual classrooms that would help teachers add technology to their classrooms. The price/projector is now down to about $800 each.
  6. Advertising – PR Brochures and Materials need to be updated and available to hand out to new families and members in the community. Our budget annually is approximately $2,000, but more could be used as we try to find ways to get more information about WLS into the community.
  7. AR Books and Tests – We are always in need of funds for our library. Any amount is welcome and will be put to good use as we continue to improve our library.
  8. Athletic Committee Ideas – Some of our athletic uniforms (basketball, wrestling, and track) need to be replaced.
  9. Caitlyn Pyle Memorial Scholarship Fund – This fund was started when Caitlyn died suddenly in October 2004. The fund is meant help with the tuition needs of future pre-school students.
  10. WLS Scholarship Program – Our annual scholarship assistance for the past few years has been approximately $8,000/year. The assistance allows a number of families to send their children here to WLS when they wouldn’t have been able to without the help. Any help directed to the WLS Scholarship Fund would be appreciated.
  11. Music and Art Curriculums – We need to provide our teachers in these areas a curriculum that they could gain ideas from.
  12. Maintenance and Repairs – A few items in the school need to be replaced or repaired as they are aging. The prices on some of these items are known, for some of the larger projects that we know will be coming some day in the future (future roof repair) we are beginning a maintenance account that will be there when we need it.

Thanksgivings – The following items have been donated recently and we are thankful for the donations and memorials that made the purchase of these items possible. We some times forget to give thanks for the blessings we receive. We are truly thankful for all those who continue to support WLS with donations and continued prayers.

  1. White Boards – These boards replaced the original chalkboards in the classrooms and use erasable markers rather than chalk.  They are a great advantage, health wise to not having chalk dust floating through the classrooms.
  2. Lower Grade Desks and Chairs –These have just been purchased for the first grade. They have made a big improvement in that classroom.
  3. Update library database to network – We have been able to update our library check-out system with a new computer, book scanner, and library software. This update to the library is a great improvement and is greatly appreciated by the teachers and students.
  4. Signage - Main Office & Entrance & Directional signs have been placed on outside doors. The large sign and cross above our main entrance have made us a more visible school in our community.
  5. Parking Lot Improvements – This past summer we leveled our front parking lot and created new entrance and exit locations. The trash bin was also relocated. Most of the labor and some of the materials for that project were donated.
  6. Playground Benches – We have added two new benches to our playground area. These were made possible with memorial gift monies from last year.
  7. Computers for the Computer Lab – We have been able to add additional computers to our lab.
  8. New Water Heater – Our old water heater gave out last year. Along with donated labor and a few designated donations, we were able to replace the water heater.
Outside Maintenance – We have faithful helpers who come regularly to see that our trees and shrubs are trimmed up and kept looking good.
