Fully Rely On God

      F.R.O.G.

Text Box: WOODBURN LUTHERAN SCHOOL
PAW PRINTS
NOVEMBER 25, 2009

Thanksgiving has a decidedly American flavor to it. The first harvest festival was most likely celebrated by the surviving Plymouth colonists and about ninety Wampanoag Native Americans in the fall of 1621. The event was a three day celebration that gave the surviving colonists a chance to thank the Wampanoag for showing them kindness and teaching them essential survival skills. Over half of the original settlers from the mayflower had died during the first months in the New World. Only four adult women had survived the Atlantic crossing and the first winter. During the Pilgrims’ early years, they made seven times more graves than huts. They still found reason to thank God! He had provided them with the Wampanoag who shared what food and knowledge they had with the Pilgrims. One member of this group of Native Americans, Squanto, even spoke English! Their celebration probably included venison, cornbread, cheese pie, Indian pudding, pemmican (crushed cranberries and dried meat with some melted fat) and all sorts of sea food like clams and eels.  Turkey and dressing came along later, thanks to Ben Franklin.

May you and your family experience a true spirit of thankfulness that you are able to express and live throughout the year.  Blessings!      ~~Ruth

THANK YOU! – A BIG Thank You to all the parents who brought their children early on Sunday to practice the chime music.  We had the MOST children ever to play at Christ and they did a SUPER job!  This group is also the youngest we have had and most of them had no idea what music and chimes were.  We started practicing the end of August and they have been doing great!  We appreciate the effort of parents rearranging schedules so they could be present.  Please reserve December 13, 10:30 service at Christ.  We plan to play a couple Christmas carols they have been working on.  God Bless…Mrs. Gerig and Mrs. Rekeweg!

WLS...Come Grow With Us!

As Christians, our answers to the trials and tribulations of life are found in the reality and truth of God in Christ, the Christ revealed in the Bible and revealed as the living Christ in the minds and hearts of women and men throughout the ages. Christ offers hope to all who live in fear, despair, or discouragement. God's Spirit strengthens and encourages us in our Christian lives.

However, the Christian life and the assurance one has in and through Christ cannot automatically be achieved. Individuals must grow in their faith. It is only wishful thinking to believe that children, youth, and adults become Christians without careful thought and planning. We cannot leave faith to chance. As Christians, we are called to teach others the faith. Christian education is the guided process of helping persons grow in faith.

Through Christian education, we invite people and

communities to be transformed as they are

inspired and challenged to:

    * Know and experience God through Jesus Christ.

    * Claim and live God's promises and

    * Grow and serve as Christian disciples.

While it is important for persons to know about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, sin, salvation and the Bible, Christian education invites persons to be transformed by God's love. Christian education helps persons come to know God personally through Jesus Christ, to accept God's love and to grow in faith as disciples. The life in Christ is the goal of Christian education.

Christian education teaches children, youth and adults the truth of Jesus and equips them to be in ministry both in and outside the church. Whether pastor, staff or volunteer, the teacher, who is growing in Christ, helps children, youth, and adults know what Christ did and who Christ is.

The need for Christian education has never been more urgent than it is today. Adults are searching for a life that has meaning. Youth are searching for identity and acceptance. Children are searching for love and security. The need for Christ is real!

Christian education is more than Sunday School – it must be a central commitment of the congregation & should permeate the life of the community of faith!

WLS Program – All children Preschool thru Grade 6 will present a Christmas Program on Monday, December 21st, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the WLS gym.  All children will be involved in this special program.  Further details will be shared as available.
