Walking in the Light

WLS Association Meeting – Our annual WLS Association meeting is scheduled for this Sunday evening, May 20. The meeting will be held in the school gym beginning at 7:00 PM. Voting members of the Association include members in good standing of Zion Lutheran Church and Christ Lutheran Church. This is an important meeting; please try to attend if at all possible.

Pre-School Finishes Up – All three of our pre-kindergarten classes finished up this past week. Enjoy your summer vacations and we hope to see all of you back next year in our pre-kindergarten program again or in our kindergarten program.

I would like to say a special Thank You to Mrs. Susan Gerig for filling in for Sarah Fleek as teacher and Mrs. Anita Collins for filling in for Susan Gerig as aide. Your assistance helped our program to continue to run smoothly these past two months.

Valedictorian and Salutatorian Honors – Each year we choose the top two students in our graduating 8th grade class. These students are picked by comparing all of the student’s Grade Point Averages from grades 5 – 8 and is considered an honor. They also have the honor of delivering speeches during the graduation service on Friday, June 1st. This year we would like to recognize the following two students:

Valedictorian - Grace Keller

Salutatorian – Nathan Wiedemann

WLS Golf Outing –  A special letter was sent out this week about our annual WLS Golf Outing. Please read the letter and see if you can help us out for this special event that does so much to help WLS. The date for the outing is Sunday, July 22nd this year beginning at 1:00. Team and Sponsor Entry Forms are available in the School Office. Sign up by June 30.

Thrivent Matching Funds – Many of you already know about the matching funds available to WLS for parent donations. As we approach the summer months when not too much money is coming in and the bills still need to be paid, this becomes a great time to think about making a special donation to WLS and having those donations matched with 50 cents for every dollar you donate through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. If you would like more information about this program, please call the office and talk with Mrs. Woebbeking.

Special Summer Projects – The summer months are the perfect time to make improvements to the school without the students in the rooms. A list of projects was printed in last week’s newsletter. Help is needed with these projects! Please contact Mrs. Bambi Keller (School Board Vice Chairperson), the school office, or Mr. Hoyer.

Chapel News  On Wednesday, May 23, our Chapel Service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 8:15 a.m., with Mr. Hoyer leading. Chapel envelopes will be given to  K-8 students on Tuesday, May 15.  Our chapel offerings for April and May will go to the Concordia Welfare and Education Mission. The amount collected through May 2 is $302.07. Parents, Grandparents, Friends of WLS students – all of you are welcome to join us for any or all of our Chapel Services. Just read your weekly newsletter and your WLS monthly calendars for chapel locations and times.

IF YOU HAD ONE WISH . . . Shane Bernier is a courageous seven-year-old boy from Lancaster, Ontario, Canada, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when he was only five. On June 6, 2006, Shane and his family received some unfortunate news: Shane experienced a relapse after completing 108 of 130 weeks of treatment.

However, despite the bad news, Shane has managed to keep a positive outlook on his situation and has made a heart-warming wish. . . He hasn’t asked for money or toys or anything of the sort. Instead, his 8th birthday is on May 30th and he would like to break the world record for the most birthday cards ever received. With every card, Shane’s courage grows. Something as simple as sending a birthday card could be enough to help Shane find peace and joy in his current circumstances.

If you would like to send a card to Shane, please send it to:

                Shane Bernier

                P.O. Box 484

                Lancaster, Ontario

                KOC 1NO

                Canada

Sending a card to Canada will take more postage, so please stop by the Post Office to check on the amount due for your card. You can also bring your card in to the WLS School office by May 24, to be sent along with some other cards.
