Text Box: WOODBURN LUTHERAN SCHOOL PAW PRINTS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER MARCH 9, 2007

 Walking in the Light

Prayer Cards – Each morning our teachers meet for devotions as we prepare for our day. We also regularly pray for our students. The students we will be praying for next week will be: Allison Messmann (6th), Kendra Sinclair (5th), Carly Huth (6th), and Buddy Douglas (6th).

Thank You – I big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this past week special for National Lutheran Schools Week. The PTL started the week off with a great breakfast. Other special activities helped to make this a memorable week. I can’t forget to thank the students and the teachers, who took all of the extra time with practices, art work, and sharing their talents to make the school look so good.

Bowling Scores – This past Monday, the 5th and 6th grades went bowling. Congratulations to Morgan Gerig, who rolled the high girls’ score of 156. Nick Sharrar bowled the high score for the boys of 102.

On Tuesday it was the 7th and 8th grades turn. Elizabeth Burke had the top score for the girls, a 121. Jared Huth was high for the boys with a top game of 108.

It was interesting to figure out the averages for all of the girls and boys in the four grades. I found out that all of the girls and boys combined had the same average score of 75/game. I’ll look forward to bowling again next year during National Lutheran Schools Week.

Bible Trivia Challenge – On Wednesday morning, each of the Chapel Families got together for a Bible trivia challenge. Mrs. Schroeder’s chapel family had the high score of 19 correct out of 26 questions. That chapel family includes the following students: Jesse Schlie (8th), Josh Maroney (7th), Carly Huth (6th), Sam Hathaway (5th), Elliot Gunderman (4th), Madison Swanson (4th), Lucas Scharr (3rd), Michael Lindberg (2nd), Meredith Mathews (1st), Jacob Gentz (K), and Rachel Scharr (K).

Try some of these questions out for yourselves. Check with your children if you get stuck on some of the questions. Go online at www.biblenet.net/trivia if you want some really challenging Bible trivia questions. (See the next page for these questions).

That day will include our closing chapel service, followed by our awards assembly, and then an early dismissal at 11:00. PSAS FORMS NOW AVAILABLE IN THE SCHOOL OFFICE   WLS Student Aid Forms for the 2007-2008 school year from the “Private School Aid Service” are now available in the School Office – see the secretary for a copy of this form. While doing your 2006 taxes (you will need this info for the form) is a good time to complete the PSAS form. Upon completion of the form, send it in by June 30, along with a non-refundable processing fee of $20.00 in the envelope provided – you will have to put postage on the envelope. This summer, before registration in August, the School Board will receive a print-out of the amount of financial aid that you can receive. If you have any questions or need help with the form, please contact a school board member.

Problem of the Week  Our Problem of the Week solvers this week include Logan Buuck, Alicia Heckley, Joe Schlie, Lily Keller, Jesse Schlie, Caleb Hathaway, and Deb Lindberg. There is more than one answer: 20,459 or 42,671. Great Job! Here’s next week’s problem(s) - (turn your answer in to Mrs. Schroeder by next Thursday morning): At Mr. Vid’s Video Rentals you can join his VID Club for a monthly membership fee of $30. Club members pay only 85 cents to rent each movie. If you are not a member of the VID Club, the movies rent for $2.25 each. How many videos would you have to rent each month to make a membership worth the investment?                                   -OR –

Ms. Poole, my P.E. teacher, asked the 100 seventh graders in my school if they could swim. Half the boys and two thirds of the girls said yes. Seventeen boys said no. How many seventh graders know how to swim?

Upcoming Spring Plant and Flower Sale – sponsored by Grades 5 & 6 for the Class Trip Fund: We will once again be selling plant and flower certificates to be redeemed at “The Greenhouse Effect” in Antwerp, Ohio – these certificates offer our customers reduced pricing, high quality plants and flowers, and your choice from huge variety of hanging baskets and bags, annual plants, rose bushes, and bedding flats of vegetables and flowers. Look for our sale “kick-off” at the WLS Fish and Chicken Strip Dinner on March 16.

Tyson Project A+ Label Collection News  This week we received $43.68 from the Tyson Company, for the A+ labels we had sent in. We did not get credit for 17 of the labels  because the whole label was not included. If you use any Tyson products, please remember to tear off and send in the whole label (or whole box end panel).  Thanks for saving these labels for WLS!

Recycling is next Saturday, March 17 – students and parents will be called early next week and a participation form may also be sent home with the students who are scheduled to recycle.

Prayer Corner  Pray for Abby Kammeyer’s great-aunt Kate, who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. She is scheduled for surgery next week.

Looking Ahead  Please note the following important announcements:

  1. The Wrestling weigh-in for grades 6, 7, & 8 wrestlers will be next Friday, March 16, right after school. As far as we know now, several parents will take the boys to Concordia High School for the weigh-in and then bring them back to WLS for the Fish Fry. Watch for a transportation form and for more information coming next week. Good luck to all of our wrestlers as they compete at the Open Wrestling Tourney this Sunday, March 11, at Concordia High School, beginning at 1:00 p.m. This Open tourney has always been held on a Saturday, but was moved to Sunday this year due to some scheduling conflicts.
  2. The PTL Family Night Committee has decided to have a Family Bowling Night on Saturday, April 28, at Woodburn Lanes. Reserve this date for some family fun and look for sign-up forms to be coming home soon. This committee met last evening to finalize their plans.
  3. With wrestling season wrapping up, we will soon be at the beginning of Track Season. Track Practice will begin right after Spring Break, probably on Monday, April 9. Now is the time to check to see if your son or daughter has their track sports fee paid – you have three weeks to take care of this before Spring Break. Just call the school secretary, who will tell you if your child(ren) has their fee paid. This year’s Saxon League Track Schedule is as follows: WLS has meets on Tuesday, April 17, Thursday, April 26, Monday, April 30, Thursday, May 3, and Monday, May 7. Important Reminder

It is important to us that all of our volunteers understand that you are much appreciated and we thank you for all that you do on behalf of WLS. As a volunteer, you may have a key that allows you access to our school and along with that key are assumed responsibilities. If you are in the school building or have a key to WLS for volunteer purposes, please access only the area(s) where you need to work.

The school board has been aware for some time that there have been after-hour activities in classrooms and areas where visitors/workers may not need to be. If you don’t have a reason to be in a room, then please stay out. For instance, do not enter classrooms unless the teacher of that room is aware that you will be in the room and when. Due to state health laws, unauthorized people in the kitchen area puts our school lunch program at risk. If you need to work in the computer room, please be sure that the school office is aware of when and why you will be working in that area. These are but a few examples; all we are asking is if you are entering the school for specific purposes please enter only the area(s) necessary to complete your task.

We are not in a position, financially, to spend the thousands of dollars that would be required to individualize the locks on all of the doors inside WLS, nor do we want to. As a Christian School we use the ‘honor system’ not only to minimize our security spending costs but out of trust for one another.  Please, we ask you, continue to keep WLS a trusting, Christian environment for our children and one another.

If you happen to have a key to the building that you no longer need, please turn it in to the school office.  As always, if you have any questions, feel free to talk with any of us.

Respectfully,

Woodburn Lutheran School Board
