Walking in the Light

Concordia Lutheran High School Award – We are pleased to announce that Abby Rekeweg (8th) was awarded the $400 Dr. Al and Carol Wick Academic Award and Scholarship to CLHS for next school year. The purpose of this award is to recognize excellence in the classroom and to provide encouragement and assistance in attending CLHS. Abby will be part of the CLHS freshman class in the fall. We congratulate her and wish her well during her high school years at Concordia.

Special Recognition – We would like to give special recognition to two Woodlan High School students who helped our teachers as volunteer aides this past school year. Nathan Schlie assisted in our pre-school classroom all year long. Erin Lindberg also volunteered this spring quarter in Mrs. Hoeppner’s room. Thank you for volunteering and all of the help you gave our teachers. The students in those rooms also would like to say a special thank you.

Other Volunteers – It is always difficult to start listing volunteers who have helped us out this past year because someone is always unintentionally left out. I do want to mention Mrs. Helen Brown; however, for all that she does to help give a little extra special teaching time for some of our students. She retired a “few years” ago, but keeps coming back to help because she just loves to teach. Thank You, Mrs. Brown.

Choir Directors – Other special volunteers are Mrs. Sharon Gerig and Mrs. Bev Rekeweg, who helped our choirs prepare to sing in the churches. Mrs. Sandie Beerbower also helped out when one of the other ladies were gone. Our choirs and our churches thank you for this gift of music.

Golf Sponsorships – We are continuing to look for hole sponsorships for our annual WLS Golf Outing. These sponsorships are $50 each. Even if you can’t participate in the outing yourself, please consider one of these sponsorships. For those interested in golfing, there are plenty of extra forms in the school office.

Continuing Summer Registration – Our registration for next school year will continue all summer long. If you hear of anyone looking to change schools or someone just moving into our area that needs a school for next year, please have them call the school office and someone will get back to them this summer.

Good News! – The Zion “Little Blessings” Day Care for children is now open! If you are interested in learning more about this new Day Care Program, call the Zion Lutheran Church office at 632-4679 or Mrs. Jennifer Osborn at 749-7252.

Chapel Offerings – Approximately $450 was donated – enough for at least 70 kits!

Mud Sock Corn Crate Grand Prix Contestants – Two of our students, Evan Gustin and Shawn Kitzmiller, will again compete in the Mud Sock Corn Crate Grand Prix on Saturday, August 4th as part of the Harlan Days Festival. The cars are being sponsored by Woodburn Lutheran School. The racing begins around 1:00 PM on the driveway hill by Harlan Cabinets. Come on out and cheer them on if you are visiting Harlan Days that morning. Thanks again to Mark Gustin for helping to build the cars.

Many thanks to the following people:

  1. Bob and Loraine Buuck, who brought ice cream treats to school for everyone on Thursday!
  2. Jennifer Osborn and Jennifer Swanson, our fabulous cooks, who honored our 8th grade graduates on Thursday by making “mortarboard” cookies! They used a Reese’s mini upside down on the bottom, with a chocolate graham cookie on top (attached with frosting); the top had a M & M candy on it attached with frosting and a “tassel” made out of frosting! Cute – and delicious too!

Reminder: Over the summer, continue to save UPC Codes (only) from Campbell’s labels; General Mills Box Tops for Education, and used ink cartridges. Perhaps by the time school begins in August we will know what Kroger (who bought Scott’s) will do about their previous SCRIP and receipt programs.

Summer SCRIP Sales Get your SCRIPS at Christ or Zion Lutheran Churches on Sundays or, if you are a non-member family, send your SCRIP orders to Kris Meyer, 23415 Woodburn Road, Woodburn, IN 46797. She will return your SCRIPS by mail.
