Walking in the Light

Prayer Cards – Each morning our teachers meet for devotions as we prepare for our day. We also regularly pray for our students. The students we will be praying for next week will be: Tara Gerig (5th), Riley Coil (Pre- K), and Brandon Savor (Pre-K).

No School on Monday, February 19 (President’s Day) – East Allen County Schools will not have school on Monday, either.

Mid-Quarter Reports – Due to the Snow Days off, Mid-Quarter reports will be given to grades 3-8 students on Friday, February 23, instead of next Tuesday the 20th.

Journey to the Cross  Next Wednesday, February 21, is Ash Wednesday – the beginning of the Lenten Season. Christ and Zion Churches will have Lenten Services each Wednesday until Holy Week – beginning at 7:00 p.m. and each will have suppers before each service, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Lenten Themes at Christ and Zion: Christ Lutheran’s Lenten Theme is “The Valley of Lent”, with “The Valley of the Dry Bones” as the message on February 21; Zion’s theme is “Our Suffering Savior”.

Chapel News  Next Wednesday’s Chapel service (February 21 – Ash Wednesday), will be at Christ Lutheran Church, 8:15 a.m., with Pastor Adams leading. Our Chapel offerings for February and March will go to Camp Lutherhaven.  Chapel envelopes will be given to the K-8 students next Tuesday – please give generously on February 21, as vry few chapel offerings have come in during the past two weeks due to the days off. Parents, Grandparents, Friends of WLS students – you are all welcome to join us for any or all of our Chapel Services. Just read your weekly newsletter and your WLS monthly calendars for chapel locations and times.

Thrivent GivingPlus Information  The New Forms Are Here!  Changes on the form include: using block letters for your personal information (A,B,C, etc.); using only the first five letters of your last name; and using only the last four digits of your Social Security Number as your “unique secure I.D.” Your full SSN and/or your Thrivent I.D. number are no longer needed. The form has been simplified in other ways also. Our Organization ID and the Woodburn Lutheran School name and address are already printed on this form. Each family at Christ and Zion Churches will receive a letter about this program and a new form with their March Newsletter. Additional forms are available at WLS and at Christ and Zion. Please use these new forms only – destroy any “old” forms. Things that have not changed include: 1) The total amount you can donate per year is $600 - $300 of that will be matched; 2) You can donate whenever you like (e.g. monthly, quarterly, etc.) – each time, the supplemental dollars will be provided once the paperwork is received and processed; 3) The special bonus for volunteers (only once per year) is still $25.00, after you have contributed 25 or more hours of volunteer service to the organization you have supported with your GivingPlus gift (WLS) – Volunteer service includes unpaid time working on projects/ activities or serving on a governing/task group for the recipient organization (WLS). Hours spent on Thrivent Financial chapter or congregational service team projects are not eligible for consideration. All of the above information is printed on the back of your new form – please read it before you donate money or fill out your form. If you have any questions about the Thrivent GivingPlus Program, please call school secretary, Joan Woebbeking, at 632-5493, who is the Thrivent Coordinator for WLS.

Help Needed!  A parent or several parents (we have had one volunteer come forward – one or two more would be helpful) from grades 5 & 6 are needed to coordinate and run the upcoming Spring Plant and Flower Sale to raise money for their 7th and 8th class trip. An easy job – just get order forms out, take in the money, and then get certificates to those who order. Call the school office or Deb Lindberg for more info.

Spelling Team Competition  Please see the bright orange note that was sent home with each grades 3-8 student last week, talk about this opportunity with your child/children, sign them up, and have your child/children return the form to their home room teachers by Tuesday, February 20. (Since we have not had school for a few days, not many have come in to the office.

General Mills Box Tops for Education Information: If you have any General Mills Box Tops for Education that you haven’t turned in yet, please get them to the School Office or put in the Campbell’s Labels containers at Christ and Zion by TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 20 – labels are due at GM by February 28. If you miss the deadline, please DO NOT throw your labels away – continue to collect them and send them in to the office for next school year.

Needed at WLS – More business and/or personal stationery that you cannot use anymore – we use the back, blank side to copy tests, etc. for the classrooms. This is usually very good paper, makes great copies, and saves on the amount of paper we have to purchase. Bring any amount in to the school office – or – call for pickup. Thanks!

Book Fair News  Our Annual Scholastic Book Fair is fast approaching! It will be held March 9-16. With the success of last year’s used book sale, the library committee would once again like to offer this to the community and, most of all, the students. If you have any new and/or used books that you would like to donate, there will be collection boxes at WLS and also at Christ and Zion Churches. Thank you for your support!  The Library Committee

Wizard’s Game Date – Thursday, April 12, game at 11:00 a.m. – TICKET INFORMATION WAS SENT HOME LAST FRIDAY – PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT GETTING YOUR RESERVATION AND MONEY BACK TO SCHOOL IF YOU WANT TO GO TO THE GAME.

Woodburn Baseball Commission News – Woodburn Summer Ball (T-Ball, Lob Ball, Minor Softball, Major Softball, Minor Baseball, Major Baseball, Koufax) Registration Forms were sent home with each student ages 5 through grade 8 last week. More forms are available in the school office. Registration will be held on February 17 and 24, at Woodburn Lutheran School, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Call Deb Fitzgerald at 493-6508 if you have any questions.

The “Problem of the Week” is BACK!!  Solve this problem, write your solution on paper, and give it to Mrs. Schroeder by Thursday morning of next week, and receive a tasty tidbit of sweetness!! (We are running this again, due to the snow days).

The problem: Say that a town has 1,000 residents, of whom 60% are women and 40% are men. Of the women, 40% wear one earring. Half of the rest wear two earrings, and half wear none. Of the men, 60% wear one earring. Half of the rest wear two earrings, and half wear none. How many earrings are being worn in all?

Good Luck!  (Thanks to a faithful WLS problem solver and Marilyn vos Savant.)

PSAS FORMS NOW AVAILABLE IN THE SCHOOL OFFICE   WLS Student Aid Forms for the 2007-2008 school year from the “Private School Aid Service” are now available in the School Office – see the secretary for a copy of this form. While doing your 2006 taxes (you will need this info for the form) is a good time to complete the PSAS form. Upon completion of the form, send it in by June 30, along with a non-refundable processing fee of $20.00 in the envelope provided – you will have to put postage on the envelope. This summer, before registration in August, the School Board will receive a print-out of the amount of financial aid that you can receive. If you have any questions or need help with the form, please contact a school board member.

A check for $52.34 was received this week from Advantage Cartridge. Please continue to collect and send or bring in your used ink cartridges to the school office. Although this was not a large check, each amount helps with our technology purchases. Many thanks to those who collect and bring in their cartridges. Christ and Zion members each have a place to collect cartridges at church (Christ members, put them in the coat room; Zion members, put them on or around the small table outside of the office).

Kindergarten Open House and Information Night – something new! – is scheduled for Tuesday, February 27, from 7:00-7:45 p.m.  Preschool parents whose children are eligible for Kindergarten this fall (5 years old by August 1) are encouraged to attend. If you know of someone who has a kindergarten age child, please give them this information. Also, call the school office with any name(s) of prospective WLS kindergarten students so that we can send our Registration packet to them. Preschool and Kindergarten Registration for the 2006-2007 School Year will begin on March 5.

CHOIR NEWS – Christ Junior Choir will sing this Sunday at the 10:30 service.

Fish and Chicken Strip Dinner (March 16) Pre-Sale Tickets (10 adult and 3 children) were sent home with each family unit today. Please read the note attached to the tickets for instructions. Also, please return all cash/checks and/or unsold tickets to the School Office by Friday, March 9.

Relay for Life Candy Sale  “Dear Parents and Students: On Friday, February 23, 2007, Kaitlyn Wiley will be selling Snickers, Reese Cups, and Twix Bars for $1.00 each at 12:15 in the lunch room. Kaitlyn is participating in the Defiance County, Ohio, Relay for Life to help find a cure for cancer. 100% of the candy sales will go towards Kaitlyn’s personal donation pledge.
