Text Box: WOODBURN LUTHERAN SCHOOL PAW PRINTS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER APRIL 13, 2007

 Walking in the Light

Prayer Cards – Each morning our teachers meet for devotions as we prepare for our day. We also regularly pray for our students. The students we will be praying for next week will be: Mitchell Warnock (1st), Alec Witmer (Pre-K), Karli Bricault (Pre-K), and Emily Gustin (2nd).

WLS Chapel Invitation – We would like to invite everyone to our special chapel service next Wednesday, April 18th. This will be in our gym starting at 1:00 PM. This special time is to allow our guest, Michelle Hoeppner, to make another presentation at another school in the morning. Miss Hoeppner will talk about her mission work in China. Please consider joining our students next Wednesday afternoon to hear about what is being done in China to spread God’s Word.

Track Begins – Our WLS track season will begin next Tuesday, April 17th. The meet will begin at 4:00 at the Concordia Seminary track. Come out to cheer our students on if you are in the area. We are thankful to Jacob Gentz, one of our parents who volunteered to be an assistant coach with Mrs. Schlie.

Confirmation Time – Confirmations are coming up in both of our churches. Confirmands at Christ Lutheran Church are Derek Gerig, Kristen Gerig, Grace Keller, Marissa Messmann, Evan Powell, Abby Rekeweg, Jesse Schlie, Joe Schlie,  A.J. Stites, and Pastor Asher’s son, John Asher. Their confirmation date is Sunday, April 22, in the 10:30 service. The confirmation service for Zion (Jared Huth and Nathan Wiedemann) will be held the following Sunday on April 29th, during their 9:00 service. Please pray for these students at this special time in their lives.

New Baby – For those who haven’t heard yet, Mrs. Fleek had her baby this past Wednesday at 12:24 AM. Carter Benjamin Fleek weighed in at 8 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 21 inches. Congratulations Sarah and Nick!

Late Arrival Our last LATE ARRIVAL for this school year is NEXT THURSDAY, APRIL 19 – SCHOOL WILL BEGIN AT 10:00 A.M.

Prayer Corner – Pray for the family of Anita Woebbeking, mother-in-law of Secretary Joan Woebbeking, who died on Saturday, April 7.

Chapel News  As noted on the first page, our April 18 Chapel service will be held at WLS at 1:00 p.m., in order to accommodate our speaker, WLS grad, Michelle Hoeppner, who will speak  about her work in China with the Concordia Welfare and Education Organization – mark this date on your calendar – it’s fascinating to hear her talk about her work in China. She also speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese.  Chapel envelopes will be given to the K-8 students on Tuesday, April 17. The total collected for Camp Lutherhaven in February and March was $231.93. Parents, Grandparents, Friends of WLS students – you are all welcome to join us for any or all of our Chapel Services. Just read your weekly newsletter and your WLS monthly calendars for chapel locations and times.

God’s continued blessings to the following students who celebrated their April and June Baptism Birthdays in Wednesday’s Chapel service: April – Spencer Sharrar, Cole Osborn, Jordan Wells, Abigail Kammeyer, Matthew Wiley, and Cody Osborn; June – Lily Keller, Andrew Meyer, Caroline Meyer, Mara Kitzmiller, Mitchell Warnock, Isaac Meyer, Connor Knoblauch, and Alicia Heckley.

Zion Choir News  Some changes have been made to the Zion Primary and Junior Choir schedules – please mark these dates on your calendar:

  1. Zion Primary Choir will sing on Sunday, April 22; however, the Junior Choir will not sing that day, due to Confirmation at Christ.
  2. Both the Primary and Junior at Zion will sing for their last time this school year on Sunday, May 13.

PSAS FORMS NOW AVAILABLE IN THE SCHOOL OFFICE   WLS Student Aid Forms for the 2007-2008 school year from the “Private School Aid Service” are now available in the School Office – see the secretary for a copy of this form. While doing your 2006 taxes (you will need this info for the form) is a good time to complete the PSAS form. Upon completion of the form, send it in by June 30, along with a non-refundable processing fee of $20.00 in the envelope provided – you will have to put postage on the envelope. This summer, before registration in August, the School Board will receive a print-out of the amount of financial aid that you can receive. If you have any questions or need help with the form, please contact a school board member.

Christ Primary Choir sings at the 8:00 a.m. service on Sunday, April 15.

Spring Plant and Flower Sale in Progress – sponsored by Grades 5 & 6 for the Class Trip Fund: We are again selling plant and flower certificates to be redeemed at “The Greenhouse Effect” in Antwerp, Ohio – these certificates offer you reduced pricing, high quality plants and flowers, and your choice from huge variety of hanging baskets and bags, annual plants, rose bushes, and bedding flats of vegetables and flowers. Order forms were sent home with each student a few weeks ago. More forms are available in the school office. Buy some plant and flower gift certificates to give as Mother’s Day, birthday, or anniversary gifts, etc. They will be very much appreciated!

WLS 2nd Annual Rummage Sale will be held in the gym on May 11 and 12 – you may now bring your items for the Rummage Sale and put them on the stage in the gym. Please note: LOTS OF PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS ARE NEEDED FOR THE RUMMAGE SALE – BRING YOURS TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE OR PUT THEM ON THE STAGE IN THE GYM.

Left from the Fish Fry – Two blue glass pie pans. If these are yours, please let us know which church to take them to or stop in to get them.

Woodburn Public Library News  This month they are “Celebrating the Month of the Young Child” and will be displaying art work from the WLS Preschool classes – stop in to see their art work and check out a book to read! Also at the Public Library this month: Fairy Tale Trivia – a special program for National Library Week, 2007 – held during Library Hours April 15-21. All ages welcome. Also, on Thursday, April 19, 7:00 p.m., the Library will sponsor “Scene-It” Night – “It’s not your parent’s trivia game” – this is for Young Adults. Show off your trivia talents – refreshments served too!

Speaking of Reading – Each PS-4 through Grade 8 student received a flyer about the IPFW “Summer Reading Skills Programs” being held on the IPFW campus beginning on June 9. For more information or to register, call the Institute of Reading Development at 1-800-978-9596.

Spring Thaw is Here – (well, we hope it’s soon here!) – and the school parking lot is sure showing the wear and tear. We need to add more stone to the parking lot. We are requesting donations for this project. Please check into the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Matching Funds program for your donation as well. Extra money not needed for the parking lot project will be used to fund other needed maintenance updates.

April Recycling is next Saturday, April 21 – participation forms will be sent home on Monday, April 16, to those students who are expected to work in April

Verizon Note  The Verizon “Extra Credit for Schools” program will be discontinued as of May 31, 2007 (due in part to a steady decline in customer participation over the last four years). Many thanks to those who took part in this program for WLS.

Meijer Community Rewards If you have been in this program, you have probably received a letter informing you of the changes coming soon. Basically, you will have to renew your Meijer Community Rewards Card before May 1, 2007 (Card number is 465000658444) – call 1-800-962-7011; and you will have to use cash or a Meijer Credit Card to receive any rewards from now on. (Credit Card – 1% back; Cash – 0.5% back). If you did not receive a letter, call the school office for more information.
